About Athos

"Though Athos was barely thirty years old and was extremely handsome of body and mind, no one knew him to have a mistress. He never spoke of women. But he did not prevent people from speaking of them in front of him, though it was easy to see that this sort of conversation, which he mixed into only with bitter words and misanthropic observations, was perfectly disagreeable to him. His reserve, his unsociability, and his silence made him almost an old man." -- The Three Musketeers, Chapter VII

Athos was a man who drifted among the King of France's most elite guard known as the coveted Musketeers. His skill with a blade as sharp as his tongue was nothing short of legendary within their ranks, as was his affirmation toward the bottle. As with the wine, it was rare sight to see him seperated from his two closest companions, Porthos and Aramis, and soon after, a young man calling himself D'Artagnan, who later became his dearest of friends. For the longest time his past was held closely and in secret, even from those closest to him and he would drown his sorrows in the drink.

The true name that Athos had buried was later revealed. The Comte de La Fére Olivier, whom was presumed dead, and the previous husband of the then known Milady de Winter, a beautiful woman who was as deadly as the black widow and hunted the same. Their marriage was bittersweet. Though Olivier loved Milady, his treatment of her would tell other tales. Upon the day he discovered her to be a marked woman, her shoulder bearing the fleur-de-lis, he mercilessly hung her without remorse for her crimes as was the duty of the master of the land. It was not without grief, though, and his guilt prompted him to leave everything behind; his nobility, his lands, and left to later join the ranks of the Musketeers. Miraculously since Athos did not see the hanging the whole way through, Milady escaped the fatal clutches of her noose and later found herself recruited as a secret spy under Cardinal Richelieu's protection.

Many years down the road, Athos would once again cross paths with Milady de Winter, a fate twined within the web of adventure, betrayal, intrigue, and fatal losses. Among the most prominent missions was to stop the Cardinal from revealing the affair between Queen Anne and the Duke of Buckingham, of which Milady had detailed information. What fate held for the woman, though, was grim. This time Milady was successfully executed by the same executioner who branded her in the beginning for the crimes of many deaths she'd caused since her last encounter with Athos, two including her husband Lord de Winter and Madame Bonacieux. Athos, though remaining deeply scorned, uttered his forgiveness before she drew her final breath.

Athos is an extraordinary swordsman and is revered as a leader among his brothers for his intelligence and skills (not to mention his partnership with the drink), becoming a legend alongside his companions Porthos, Aramis, and the great D'Artagnan. His value of honor and loyalty are held in high regard but he will always defend a just cause, even if that means turning his back even on his king. While he did find some peace within Milady de Winter's death, he is still haunted by his past. He is still wary around women though a hatred once viciously harbored has dissolved greatly and he remains a respectable gentleman. He is not the easiest man to get along with, although when acquired as a friend, he is adamant, trustworthy and loyal.
